Rick Perry leads Mitt Romney in a new Virginia poll, which has both GOP presidential hopefuls locked in a dead heat with President Obama in a state that was key to his 2008 election.
The Quinnipiac Poll shows Perry, the Texas governor, leading former Massachusetts governor Romney for the GOP nomination, 25%-19%. The poll also shows Obama’s popularity slipping, with a majority of Virginia voters now saying he does not deserve a second term.
Virginia is a key swing state in the 2012 elections. In 2008, Obama became the first Democrat to carry the Old Dominion in 44 years.
“Rick Perry’s campaign sees carrying the South in the nomination race as critical and the data from the Capital of the Confederacy gives him reason to be optimistic,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
