Propane rail car on fire, 5,000 homes threatened

Thousands of Northern Calif. residents forced to flee as crews try to drain fuel

LINCOLN, Calif. — Firefighters will try to drain propane from a burning rail car in Northern California on Wednesday in a bold maneuver meant to head off an explosion after the blaze forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

Officials decided to take the step after consulting with members of a national response team from Houston, who were flown in overnight to offer advice, Lincoln Fire Chief Dave Whitt said. The fuel would be flushed it into a massive hole in the ground.

Fire officials initially said the blaze could continue for 21 days, but on Whitt said Wednesday that scenario was unacceptable. Nearly 5,000 homes in the city of 40,000 are evacuated, and students in the area are missing their first days of school. Three different evacuation centers have been opened in the area to accommodate residents, reported Sacramento news station KCRA.

Whitt said firefighters now hope to have the blaze under control within 24 to 48 hours. Fire officials will begin the procedure Wednesday afternoon, according to KCRA.
