Israeli soldiers clean the barrel of a tank near the southern kibuttz of Nahal Oz on the border of the Gaza Strip.

Jerusalem (CNN) — The barrage of rockets and mortars fired into southern Israel continued Sunday, with the military reporting 17 such attacks early Sunday morning.

A day earlier, 64 rockets and mortars were fired from Gaza, forcing more than 500,000 people into bomb shelters, defense officials said. At least one person was killed in an attack in Beer Sheva, authorities said.

The Saturday projectiles struck at least seven cities in a cycle of militant attacks and Israeli reprisals that began four days ago with coordinated strikes against Israeli civilians that left seven dead.

The strikes follow news that a military wing of Hamas was ending a two-year de facto truce following retaliatory Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

Hamas’ armed wing, the Izzedine al Qassam Brigades, said it fired four long-range Grad rockets at Ofakim, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) west of Beer Sheva. Two children and a man were injured when one of the rockets directly hit a building, Bin said.

The series of attacks and airstrikes have increased tensions in the region, and comes a month before the Palestinians plan to make a bid for statehood in the United Nations.

Israel believes the attacks have their roots in Gaza, but are coming out of the neighboring Egyptian region of Sinai. Egypt denies the allegation, saying it has been cracking down on terror groups in its portion of the Sinai.

The Popular Resistance Committees in Gaza and Hamas denied involvement in attacks on Israel on Thursday that sparked the latest cycle of violence. Hamas has said Israel was looking for a pretext to attack Gaza.

Hamas’ military wing announced Saturday it was ending a truce it has had with Israel since late 2008. But it has carried out attacks targeting Israelis in response to what it has described as acts of Israeli aggression.

Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Understand that the entire country of Israel is no bigger than the state of New Jersey. If that nation sees its existence threatened it will use every weapon it has and that includes nuclear weapons. There has actually never been any proof that Israel has nuclear weapons. It may be an illusion to strike fear into its enemies. Let’s hope the test never comes to that.
