Straw poll: Bachmann wins, Perry beats Romney

AMES, Iowa — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann narrowly won the 2011 Ames straw poll by only 152 votes over Texas Rep. Ron Paul on Saturday.

Bachmann won 4,823 votes compared to Paul’s 4,671 votes, and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty placed third with 2,293 votes. A total of 16,892 Iowans voted in the straw poll.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose name was not on the ballot, generated 718 write-in votes, or 151 more votes than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum beat businessman Herman Cain by 201 votes. The candidates won 1,657 and 1,456 votes, respectively.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman gathered 69 votes.
